About three years ago, Sparkke co-founder Rose Kentish met Tommaso Liccioli Watson, a then phD candidate specialising in Wine and Beer fermentation science. Tommaso not only brought us a special yeast that he grew in his lab for our carbon zero beer, he was onsite at our microbrewery to pitch the yeast and kick off the whole fermentation process.

HOPS PRODUCTS AUSTRALIA - Last but not least, Michael and the crew at HPA have produced pellets that gave our IPA more of the citrusy and piney resinous character that you’ll find really boosted the intensity of our flavourful Australian IPA.

With every piece of evidence being released about the effect of global warming, we need to act urgently to stop the devastating effects. This has been the driving factor towards taking our first steps towards delivering a quantifiable carbon neutral footprint by 2025. PRODUCT INCEPTION

Rose Kentish, Sparkke co-founder and Head of Product documented her vision for our carbon zero IPA knowing that celebrating the flavours of South Australia would be central to the beer’s development. Rose shared her concept with genuine brewing legend Shawn Sherlock, visiting from Foghorn Brewery engaging his phenomenal knowledge and experience about all things beer. Along with Rose and Shawn, the Sparkke brew team kicked off recipe development in earnest.

 

First step - identification of brew style. Super easy - a deeply loved and very popular indie craft beer style - Australian IPA.

 

Secondly - consultation with our Carbon Zero project manager, Ryan White. Business analyst and engineer, Ryan helped the team step out the path to a carbon neutral beer.

 

Thirdly - it was a non-negotiable that recipe development revolve around premium ingredients available locally, which led us to our wonderful suppliers mentioned above!

FIRST YOU HAVE TO MEASURE

Across every stage of its life our Carbon Zero Hero IPA beer, from production to arrival at your doorstep, generates emissions of carbon dioxide that are released into the atmosphere - these carbon emissions can be measured; this is our beer's carbon footprint.

 

We have calculated the emissions generated through the production of our beer across the supply line, from the raw materials used, through the brewing, to its packaging and finally, to delivery at your door via third party trucks and vans.

 

Once measured there are steps we can take to neutralise our carbon impact. There are currently two key methods we’ve adopted to reduce impact; reduction of carbon emissions and compensation for our emissions through offsetting.

 

 

HOW HAVE WE REDUCED OUR EMISSIONS IN OUR CARBON ZERO HERO?

While offsetting emissions by purchasing carbon credits is the easiest and fastest way to claim carbon neutrality, reduction of our own emissions at the source is our primary focus in both the short and the long term. It’s harder, takes longer, and involves significant changes in the way we operate - and realistically we’re still going to have to offset all of the emissions that we can’t eliminate to achieve neutrality.

 

We started by identifying the emission hotspots in our product lifecycle and implementing viable strategies to reduce the associated emissions. By identifying these hotspots, we made the largest impact to the process in the shortest time frame, including:

 

    • Using local suppliers of ethically produced, premium raw materials, reducing freight emissions as much as possible
    •  
    • Use freight and delivery partners who are already carbon neutral in their business such as Sendle (their offset costs are included in their shipping price in our online shop)
    •  
    • We repurposing brewing byproducts from the Whitmore as livestock feed
    •  
    • Work with suppliers who already use sustainable farming practices (our barley, which as the component of malt in our carbon zero IPA is a large contributor to our carbon footprint, uses a no-tilling farm method which is more sustainable than other methods)

 

GETTING THE PARTY STARTED - OFFSETTING

Beginning the carbon journey is neither easy, nor cheap. The process of measuring the carbon footprint of one beer and gaining an audited result from the leading industry climate active consultancies is more than $15k. One beer. If you are working to measure and offset ten different beers, the cost would be circa $150k; this isn’t viable for small craft companies such as Sparkke. The evolving climate active consultancies is really geared for the big end of town.

 

Meet Trace, one of our starting partners on this project. Trace is a relatively new, female-founded tech company on a mission to help small companies like Sparkke transition to net zero. After all of our carbon reduction strategies had been deployed and we held the newly filled cans in our hands, we supplied Trace with all of the information required to measure the CO2 emissions associated with our first carbon zero beer, and provide a carbon offset amount to give us a carbon zero result on the first batches of our carbon zero beer. Every time we produce a new batch of this beer, we will purchase the same amount of carbon credits.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?

Well, it’s a sip in the right direction. For every four pack of our Carbon Zero Hero IPA that you consume, you have offset 80 party balloons worth of CO2e from the atmosphere. That’s you, raising your can and putting your foot down about climate change - plus - hey - drinking a premium and locally crafted delicious beer. In the past, guilt-free beer for us has meant making a conscious decision to ensure all of our beers are lower in sugar, 100% natural, no preservatives, no additives and vegan. And, for the most part, lower in alcohol by volume, by category. You’re supporting our journey as a company to ensure carbon neutrality for every Carbon Zero Hero IPA consumed.

 

Our next Carbon Zero Beer will be a Pale Ale released in August, followed by a summery brew to be released in October. Yup, a net zero trilogy.

WHAT’S OUR PLAN TO GET NEUTRAL?

Moving forward, we’re conducting a full carbon audit of our business. This will be completed with Trace and the grandfather (or The Godfather?) of the net carbon movement in South Australia, Leonard Cohen. For over 30 years Leonard has worked with companies such as Cascade Brewing, Treasury Wines, and Mitsubishi to deliver carbon measurement, management and mitigation strategies and solutions.

 

Here is the three stage audit process:

  • Stage 1 – track and measure the entire carbon footprint of manufacturing our brewed and distilled products, from the sourcing of our raw materials right through to delivering them at your doorstep or being poured at venues - ours and others.
  • Stage 2 – measure the amount of CO2 generated across the entire Sparkke business including making our products, the use of our products, running our office and all the other things that go into making Sparkke a real-world business.

  • Stage 3 - measure the amount of CO2 generated across our venues including the ingredients we use, the drinks we pour, running of the venue and plenty of other smaller pieces!
